How do students learn about Heritage Practices?
  • Click on the “Locations” tab and scroll through each of our practices
  • Click on the “Join Our Network” button and complete the Student Contact Form. This will create a profile in our database and one of our recruiting experts will reach out to help guide you in practice placement.
  • (Coming Soon!)—subscribe to our student newsletter which will highlight various practices, provide student testimonials, and post-graduate employment opportunities.
How do students schedule an externship?
  • Once a practice has been selected, students will reach out directly to the student scheduling coordinator for that location, and they will handle the details (contact info will be provided).
  • If not already completed, students will be required to complete the Student Contact Form and a Student Confidentiality Agreement.
Are Externships paid?
  • For pre-clinical externships (1st-2nd year students) most are UNPAID educational experiences; however, travel and housing stipends may be available depending on the circumstances. Application available upon request (must have a confirmed externship scheduled).
  • For clinical externships (i.e. FOR credit; 3rd-4th year students) compensation for these experiences is often determined by university policy. Generally, they are UNPAID with the exception of travel/housing stipends.
  • Some individual practices offer limited paid opportunities at their discretion.
What is a Summer Internship?
  • Summer internships are reserved for motivated students who have an established relationship with one of our practices (i.e. they’ve done a previous externship, shadowed during high school/undergrad, etc.). They are scheduled directly with the sponsoring practice and are typically 8-12 weeks in duration with a defined learning focus. Summer Internships are intended to be more intensive than a typical externship with a written development plan. These are paid experiences.
  • What type of housing is available during an intern/externship?
  • Do students need professional liability insurance?
  • Are there confidentiality requirements?
  • What is the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)?
What type of housing is available during an intern/externship?
  • Housing options vary by location. Many of our clinics have on-site housing or are able to provide an option to stay with a doctor or other practice employee.
  • At other locations, arrangements can be made for off-site options (hotel, Airbnb, local short-term rental).
  • We never want housing to be a barrier to visiting one of our locations and will make necessary accommodations to secure housing!
Do students need professional liability insurance?
  • A professional liability policy is required for all veterinary students* who will be participating in any “hands-on” learning while visiting one of our practices.
  • It is the responsibility of the student to obtain their own policy.
  • Most vet schools require 3rd and 4th year students to obtain an AVMA Student PLIT policy (it’s free!) before they participate in clinical rotations (i.e. for school credit).
  • We will need to confirm that 1st or 2nd year students have also enrolled in the AVMA program (link: https://www.avmaplit.com/products/student-liability/)

*Does not apply to younger students (middle/high school, undergrad/pre-vet) as they should only be visiting in an observatory nature (i.e. NOT performing any medical procedures with or without supervision; as this would not be supported in any state practice act).

Are there confidentiality requirements?
  • All university student externs will be required to sign a Student Confidentiality Agreement with Heritage. This ensures that students recognize the importance of keeping any private HVP and customer information confidential.
What is the Tuition Assistance Program (TAP)?
  • The TAP is offered to students who were high performers in a past externship and/or internship experience with Heritage and are ready to commit to one of our HVP practices post-graduation. The TAP provides up to $2500 per semester of veterinary school remaining (typically up to a max of $10,000.00) and is paid directly to the student in regular semester installments at the time of commitment.
